Absolutely — For your safety, please don't drink & drive. Feel free to grab a cab and come the following day to pick up your vehicle.

Both cozy and full of comforts, Saint Martin | Sint Maarten is only thirty-seven square miles. As a result, it only takes about 90 minutes to circumnavigate the island. Getting around is easy via  Route Nationale 7, a local highway skirting the island’s coastline.  Rural inlaid roads connect developed regions to each other. Light congestion is frequent in some areas, but roadway delays are generally in the rearview before they become a bother.

Pro Tip: Roads around Sandy Ground and Simpson Bay Bridges have been known to stall traffic at certain times of the day when boats cross. Ask for the schedule when you arrive and leave before or after they cross.

There are no Uber services on the island nor any other rideshare options. You'll have to take a taxi, book a car rental or use public transport.

THE ISLAND

You may have already heard about the island’s well-earned reputation as a shopper's paradise. From local arts and crafts to fine foods, and rare jewelry, St. Martin has it all. Many designer brands are commonly discounted to around 40% less than US retail prices. Assortments of duty-free liquor, tobacco, leather goods, and more add to the bevy of delights the island has to offer.

There are mainly two shopping areas on the island — In chic Marigot and classy Philipsburg on the French and Dutch side respectively.

At the latter, peruse Front Street for over a mile of shopping, mainly jewelry stores. This area includes more than high fashion outlets and name-brands like Tiffany and Tommy Hilfiger, tax-free tobaccos, and exotic rums. At the Sint Rose Mall you’ll find swanky top-shelf brands like Cartier, Lalique, and Faconnable. In Philipsburg there is also an array or attractive gift stores and art galleries on Old Street. Just a short walk away, Back Street is home to a colorful local market, several souvenir shoppes, and a spree of discounted designer clothing.

In Marigot on the other hand, you’ll find a splendid assortment of old Créole houses, bistros, bars, cafés, restaurants, perfume shops, fashion and three stories of designer boutiques at Le West Indies Mall.

The French side officially uses the Euro and Dutch the Netherlands Antillean Florin. The US dollar can be spent on either sides of the island and the Euro is widely accepted on both.

Credit cards are accepted at most major outlets but it is always best to check before sitting down for dinner. The island is frequented by tourists and all merchants are well versed in calculating the exchange.

All SXM Festival charging stations accept both USD and Euro currencies at the current daily exchange rate.

For details on how the wristbands work please see the admission section of our FAQ.

The car number plates say it: “The Friendly Island”. Saint Martin is a small island with a low crime rate and a friendly, happy population. There are French and Dutch police on each respective side of the island. That said, like anywhere in the world, it is wise to take sensible precautions such as:

- Not flashing money or jewelry around, not leaving valuables in cars;

- Not going to secluded places at night or trespassing on private property

- Not being rude or disrespectful to the locals.

- Be sensible and you’ll have an amazing time on this Friendly Island!

In the dry season (When SXM Festival happens), there are fewer insects and mosquitos. We still advise attendees to bring insect repellent.

You’ll find everyone speaks English on the island, but Dutch is the official language of Sint Maarten and French the official language of Saint Martin.

On Sint Maarten, Spanish, Papiamentu, Italian, Hindi, Chinese and other languages are commonly heard.

Many SXM Festival staff will be fluent in both French and English.

We recommend drinking bottled water.
