On the scorching French Riviera in 1989, Nicolas Masseyeff was first kissed by electronic music. He has been in love ever since, and the next 15 years found him working as a record dealer before opening his own shop, _Limelight, which soon became the most respected record store in the whole of Southern France. Drawing inspiration from a wide sonic plane that includes minimalism, jazz, new wave, Detroit techno and Chicago house, producers like Steve Reich, John Cage, Carl Craig, UR, Basic Channel and Larry Heard are the ones Masseyeff looks up to.
Itʼs no surprise, then, that in 1998 he began experimenting with his own music, but it was only in
2006 that he finally formed his own musical identity and began releasing his first productions. They came in the form of his standout Hostages EP on _French label Zebra 3, then a second release followed on Zoo Brazil’s John Henry Records, as did many more under the Vedrenn alias. Nowadays he has become a core part of the Plantage13 crew along with influential artists like Stephan Bodzin, Dominik Eulberg, Super Flu and labels such as Herzblut, and Monaberry.
Having made the sad decision to leave the record store and take up DJing and production full time,
the releases have come thick and fast for Nicolas. Highlights include ʻDevaʼ, which impressed
Bodzin enough with its magical melody to lead to a full EP on his Herzblut Recordings in 2008, then came three more fine efforts on the same label making him a core part of the family there
ever since. In 2010 he first hooked up with fellow Frenchman Oxia: together the pair hit it off musically and have served up many great releases on Marc Romboyʼs Systematic and London
label Tsuba, whilst hey have also remixed Bodzin and Romboyʼs astronomic Luna project to great acclaim.
2011 brought The Motherland, a complete and coherent solo debut album on Herzblut that was an odyssey into the manʼs unique musical mind and featured plenty of twists and turns, blissful sections and plenty of joie de vivre as well as real melancholia and sorrow. Remixes and originals on Noir Music, Suara, Kaiser Disco’s KD Music, Systematic, Materials and Ostwind, as well as studio time with Miss Kittin and some
live / studio works for Kavinsky, a new event series with his Limelight crew and more collabs with Oxia all followed and continued to mark out Masseyeff as a singular talent.
2016, meanwhile, brings Nicolas and Oxia back together 15 years after the first time they met. This time, as well as working on great new music, they are also starting their own label, Diversions Music.
Lately Nicolas released on Systematic and on his own label, As the name indicates the label is the soundboard for a diverse range of electronic music: from the melodic to some techy functional attitudes, from the dance floor friendly grooves to the deeper shades of the soul. DIVERSIONS MUSIC is about the heart and not a style.
So for this year 2018 Nicolas is happy to came back to his first love with melodies and soul to tell us some poetic things to the heart, like his forth coming release on Sapiens (Agoria’s label) called « Muse »...where he achieved deeper sounds twisted with some balances introspection made with sexiness... Nicolas chose a more emotional and personal line to express himself....
